H.E.A.R.T. stands for Heritage, Environment, Art and Rural Tourism. It is a
cross-border initiative managed jointly by Strabane District Council and Donegal
County Council, and will see a total of twelve towns and villages undergo
significant heritage and environmental regeneration.
The Project has three main elements and each participating town/village
will receive each of the following:
· Environmental Improvement Scheme (Including signage)
· Shop Front Improvement Scheme
· Public Art Scheme
A heritage trail will be developed across the participating towns/villages,
with emphasis on public art and local historical significance.
In Donegal the towns involved are: Ardara, Ballybofey/Stranorlar, Ballyshannon,
Lifford, Moville, Ramelton and Raphoe. In Strabane, the towns/villages involved
are: Castlederg, Donemana, Newtownstewart, Plumbridge and Sion Mills.
The programme is valued at approximately €3,000,000, with each participating town
village receiving an equal share of the funds. An equal amount shall be spent on both
sides of the Strabane Donegal border.
This programme is funded by DARD and Border Action through Measure 1.4 of the
INTERREG IIIa Programme, International Fund for Ireland, Strabane District Council,
Donegal County Council and the private sector.
It is intended that the project will be completed by June 2008.
