Blue Bins
Strabane District Council is currently landfilling 18,000 tonnes of waste per annum. This practice is environmentally unsustainable. Approximately 50% by volume of household waste is classified as 'dry recyclable waste' and this must be diverted away from landfill. In an effort to capture this waste Strabane District Council has issued a blue bin to every household in the District for the collection of dry recyclable waste. The following items can be placed in your blue bin:
Newspapers and magazines.
All your old newspapers and magazines can be recycled in the blue bin. Magazines must be removed from plastic bags or any form of plastic packaging. We can also take Junk mail( no window envelopes), envelopes, ( no window envelopes), printed office paper, telephone directories, and home shopping catalogues.
Plastic Bottles.
Only plastic bottles with a screw top can be recycled.
Examples are:-
Plastic mineral bottles (any size) Plastic water bottles (any size) Plastic milk jars Plastic shampoo, conditioner and softener bottles Plastic washing-up bottles, household detergents and chemical bottles
Please remove the lid, wash, squash and drain all plastic bottles before placing in your blue bin.
Cardboard.
Where possible, flatten or tear up boxes to conserve space within the bin and remove all plastic wrap and polystyrene from the cardboard. Clean cardboard packaging of all descriptions e.g. egg boxes,cardboard boxes,cereal boxes.
Aluminium and steel cans.
Please ensure that all cans are empty, rinsed and drained, as food and liquid residues in cans will contaminate the paper and cardboard in the blue bin. This also includes biscuit and sweet tins.
Additional items which can now be recycled in Blue Bin
Aerosol cans - Must be completely empty.
Paper-based liquid food and drinks cartons - such as those made by tetra pak, juice cartons, milk cartons, soup cartons. These must be empty and rinsed out.
Plastic containers - All plastic containers must be empty and clean such as yogurt pots, margarine/butter tubs, washing tablet containers, clear/black plastic fruit and vegetable trays, brown and black plastic flower pots/trays.
Other waste.
The following should not be placed in your blue bin:
Food, glass of any kind*, plastic bags, bin bags, plastic wrapping, cling film, paper bags, books, green waste*, e.g. prunings, grass, polystyrene containers, trays, aluminium foil food trays, plastic meat trays or packets.
*These items can be recycled by using the Council's bringbank and recycling facilities.
