Q

How are my rates fixed?

A

Rates are set in two ways, regionally and locally. The regional rate is set by the Department of Finance and Personnel and is used to provide public services such as roads, water and education. It currently accounts for more than half the total rate set for domestic use and 64% for non-domestic use. The local rate is set annually by district councils and provides vital services such as refuse collection and disposal, street cleansing and recreation.
