‘Message in a bottle’ campaign goes from strength to strength in rural areas.
Community Associations in Ardstraw, Douglas Bridge and Victoria Bridge continue to promote the message in a bottle scheme within their districts.
‘Message in a bottle’ is a voluntary scheme intended for use by anyone with a medical condition or who feels vulnerable while living at home.
The scheme provides emergency services or carers with vital details of any conditions, medicines or allergies as well as contact details on next of kin or neighbours to be contacted in the event of an emergency.
Paul McGrady, from Victoria Bridge Community Association is supportive of the scheme. ‘The bottle contains two stickers- one to be placed on the inside of the front door and the other on the fridge door. The emergency services when seeing the stickers will know to go straight to the fridge to find the vital information that can assist with prompt treatment. They can also contact the person’s next of kin.’
Helen Compton, Chairperson from Ardstraw Community Association continued ‘ the message in a bottle scheme is a great asset and comfort to those living in isolated rural areas or those who feel vulnerable. Anyone interested in obtaining a bottle should contact his or her community association. The Community Safety Partnership based at Strabane District Council offices are coordinating the distribution of the bottles through community organisations throughout the District Council area.’
